Vulcans volleyball
signs three players
University of Hawaii at Hilo volleyball coach Tino Reyes has signed three players to national letters of intent, including Ka‘u standout Marley Strand-Nicolaisen.
Also joining the Vulcans next season will be Allee Johnson of Centerville, Ohio, and Kyndra Trevino-Scott of Carmichael, Calif.
All three of the signees are 5-foot-11 outside hitters, but the one most known to Big Islanders is Strand-Nicolaisen. She led the Trojans to their first Big Island Interscholastic Federation championship in October.
Free UHH soccer clinic
A University of Hawaii at Hilo women’s soccer clinic will be held Dec. 1 at the school’s field.
This free clinic is geared for players ages 5-12 and will run from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. Participants are asked to bring soccer shoes, shin guards and a ball.
Members of the 2012 women’s soccer team will focus on developmental skills.

Hilo taking applicants
for water polo coach
Hilo High is accepting applications for a water polo coach for the spring season.
Applications may be picked up and dropped off at the school office from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The deadline to apply is 4 p.m. Dec. 7.

Ages 13-14 basketball
meeting Wednesday
The Department of Parks and Recreation will hold a meeting at 5 p.m. Wednesday for a 13-14 boys and girls basketball leagues.
Individuals who don’t have a team can call the recreation office to be placed on a team. The meeting at 799 Piilani St. in Hilo is mandatory for coaches or representatives to enter teams.
The league will start Jan. 22.

Paradise Roller Girls
tripleheader Saturday
The Paradise Roller Girls will hold their last home matches of the season Saturday night with a tripleheader at Afook-Chinook Civic Auditorium.
The Volcano Vixens take on the Mauna Kea Killahz in the first bout at 6:45 p.m., and one of those teams will face the Hilo Bay Bruisers in the second bout.
In addition, the junior derby girls hold a pre-event bout at 5:15 p.m.
Tickets are $8 in advance at CD Wizard, Hilo Town Tavern, Jungle Love Pahoa, Jeff Hunt Surfboards in Pahoa or at www.paradiserollergirls.com.
Tickets are $10 at the door and kids 5 and under are free.
HI-Pal Winter
Basketball Classic
The Hawaii Isle Police Activities League and the Department of Parks and Recreation will hold its 32nd annual HI-PAL Winter Basketball Classic on Dec. 26-29 at various East Hawaii gymnasiums.
The deadline to enter is Dec. 14, and the fee is $80 per team, with a discounted $60 price for each team entering the 8-and-under category. A dinner banquet for all participating teams and a special skills challenge will be part of the four-day tournament.
Last year’s tournament attracted more than 500 keiki athletes from 52 different teams.

Ka‘u seeking coach
Ka‘u High School needs a head baseball coach for the upcoming spring season.
Applications are available in the school’s main office, and the application deadline is Nov. 30.

Elks Hoop Shoot Dec. 8 in Hilo
The annual Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest is set to begin, and the local contest will be held at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 8 at Hilo Armory.
The contest is open to boys and girls ages 8 through 13. The free-throw shooting contest boasts the largest noncommercial, co-educational sports program in America, with more than 3 million participants each year.
Participants advance through local, district, state, regional and national levels. One boy and one girl in each of the three age categories (8-9, 10-11, 12-13) wins a national title at the finals in Springfield, Mass. The top six national finalists’ names are inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
